Perfect fit for the job

Having used JAlbum for several years it has "just worked" most of the time. On a couple of occasions I've had to contact support and the response has been rapid and resolved the problem. Great Support.

Pros

I love the ease of use, the wide selection of skins which have multiple configuration settings, and great functional albums produce get websites.

Cons

As a Linux user it has great support but I would like a ready built package for Arch/Manjaro like they have for Ubuntu, SUSE, Redhat etc.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks for your kind review Andy, also for pointing out a room for improvement: -a package for Arch/Manjaro

Used for 4 years (2014-18), returned 2022 and the quality sank massively

I used to enjoy jalbum. I used it for school and for work for four years. When I left my school, I stopped using the site. I’d had tens of albums of old photos, all formatted and edited and whatnot using their resources. I came back in 2022 out of curiosity and a desire to edit and organize many of my photos. Upon logging in, I was hit with nostalgia: none of the site had changed. After an attempt to navigate the site, I realize that was not a good thing. It was slow, pixelated, hard to navigate, and very dated looking. There weren’t any features not provided by free internet apps, such as superimpose (great app). There weren’t any features that were modern, innovative or ground breaking. Sometimes, rather than tweak an old, dated interface it’s better to make sweeping and elegant changes. 4 years later and nothing has been updated besides maybe a font size and a few features. (I’ve been prompted about six times to write this review. I ignored it and again, but hopefully this will get you to stop requesting reviews.)

Pros

I used to enjoy the format and the ease of uploading photos that were viewable and shareable by teammates.

Cons

Service cons: jalbum used to work well. 4 years have passed though, and my renewal left me feeling cheape-d out on. The photo quality has dropped, the capacity is low, the app and interface have not improved, the site/app is slow and outdated. The technological advances possible have not been made here. Customer service cons: this is obviously not the most integral part of the app, but if you ever want to get money back or hash out complaints, it will be an uphill battle. Customer service was harsh and rude to me. I expressed me dismay at the new app, and one of the customer service reps verbally accosted me through repeated emails demanding that the status of his site was good. It’s not. Overall, that ended my relationship with jalbum and left a horrible taste in my mouth from a once great app.

Response from jAlbum

We're sorry that you're so dissatisfied with jAlbum Kenza. Your criticism seems to be directed to our lite "Online jAlbum" product and not to our desktop product, which is where we've put the vast majority of our development focus. Do try out our desktop product instead!

Excellent web gallery software

I have been using jAlbum to create my web galleries for more than 10 years and have been satisfied with it since I began using it. I have seen galleries created by other photographers believe there is no reason to consider moving to another piece of software. jAlbum does what I want it to do and does it well.

Pros

I have been using jAlbum for over 10 years and found it useful and easy to use from the start. The various skins allow the creation of galleries from relatively simple to complex, including the use of a shopping cart with some. The interface is relatively intuitive and the gallery outcomes are pleasing and professional looking. The application is updated on timely basis and keeps pace with advances in technology.

Cons

The plethora of options available in Preferences for some of the more complex skins can be somewhat overwhelming for the first time user, but many can be left as default until the user becomes more familiar with how those options can be used to enhance the gallery.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks for your elaborate and balanced review of jAlbum Paul! We agree that some skins have so many settings that it can be daunting or hard to navigate. Luckily the defaults works for most people, and should you need to look for a certain setting, then you can search for it within jAlbum using jAlbum's Search Bar. It will guide you to the right setting in a snap.

A *LOT* of bang for the buck.

I maintain a photo blog of my work and personal projects to share with potential clients and family/friends. The old software I was using made updates very time consuming and required a full upload of all the content with each update, not to mention the time to rebuild the entire album every time. jAlbum makes creation and updates so easy, I'm updating my albums almost nightly. Add the new photos, caption them, click the Build And Upload button and it's done. What used to take me hours, now takes just a few minutes.

Pros

The options for image handling and creating/modifying the structure of the albums are quite extensive and the entire look and feel of your project can be altered with a few simple mouse clicks. Embedded image manipulation controls are a nice feature and the smart build/upload is a huge time saver. The Developer and Community support has been top notch as well!

Cons

The learning curve was a bit steep initially, but there are a lot of features and terms *I* wasn't necessarily familiar with so it was a bit of a struggle to figure things out.

Response from jAlbum

Wow! Many thanks for taking the time to write this elaborate review of jAlbum Kevin!

Quick and easy way to organize your assets.

I have an active license because of how good it is for asset management, especially if you're creating content for a team of designers and developers and you also need to present your assets to the client. It allows other designers to grab the assets they need in a straightforward, visual manner. Clients can also easily decide which assets they want and which assets they don't without fuss.

Pros

It's an excellent asset management tool. It's great for demoing large quantities of images in a clean, succint manner.

Cons

Very limited as to what you can create. You're basically stuck with the same rehashed template. You have very little control over text integration and often you're often confined within the boundaries that the skin author created. I could go on and on. It's great for asset management but for creating a personal portfolio or anything else that steps outside the box the skin developer imagined, it's disappointing.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks for taking the time writing this review Newel. As you point out areas you're disappointed with, please write us at [email protected] and outline in more detail what you're missing. From our perspective, it sounds like you simply should switch to another of the many skins we provide, but I may be missing something here. One of the strengths with jAlbum's skins is that they not only control the visual appearance, but can also add new functionality. For inspiration, check out https://jalbum.net/skins and tick the "feature boxes" you're looking for.

Amazing All in One Website

Pros

Back in the 90's I use to build and code my own websites. After years of code changes keeping up with all the new formats was overwhelming. I started using more robust and integrated templates then build upon them. The problem became re-educating myself with the new platform then keeping up with the new upgrades. Sometimes these platforms would fall out of favor and more robust platforms would arise that would better suit my needs. It always became very time consuming and frustrating. When I stumbled upon JAlbum it was like a small miracle had happened. This platform takes away all the heavy lifting and complicated learning curve of all the other platforms. When I tell people how easy it is to build a site on JAlbum they don't believe me because a lot of other platforms portray themselves as super easy to use to get users to commit but only JALBUM is the real deal.

Cons

Needs better social media integration and customization.

Response from jAlbum

Well spoken! :-) Thank you so much for your kind review Tracy!

UI Needs Work

Mostly satisfied.

Pros

The skins have far more features and power than is obvious. While the sample skins are interesting, there is no tutorial on how to use the skins to their full potential.

Cons

Pricing model. You should offer a lifetime pricing option, and keep an archive of skins that work with all versions. The upgrades to newer versions most often do not justify the price of the upgrade, as the "new" features are incremental at best.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks for your feedback Dale. We do archive older skins, but they tend to not play well with mobile devices and modern web standards, so we discourage the use of them.
Although appealing to the end user, it's hard to offer a lifetime license, including lifetime updates. Along that road, it will eventually be an unbalanced offer. We instead offer lifetime licenses including 12 months of free updates.

jAlbum Use On My Company Website

I mainly use jAlbum to organize an album of pictures on a particular topic to generate an album to include on my website. I do have some plans to use it more and in a bigger way. But I need some time to work on it.

Pros

I was able to quickly install and use jAlbum to generate content that I include in my corporate web site. It is full featured; however, I don't use all the features for my needs which are simple. The cost is commensurate with my needs and budget. It perfectly fits my needs, both technically and budget-wise. I especially like the abundance of skins where I can always find one that works for me. I especially like their "responsive" skins.

Cons

Because of the abundance of skins, sometimes it takes a while to find one that best fits my needs on a particular album. But the search function by feature does help a lot.

Response from jAlbum

Thank you for your valuable review Dennis! We're also especially happy that you've explained some aspects of jAlbum that you like.

Great photo album software

I'm archiving 1,000 historical photos. jAlbum made it easy to do, easy to organize, easy to update and the metadata and tag cloud options are a great asset for this type of work.

Pros

Easy to use and inexpensive. My favorite features are slideshow and tag cloud with metadata. No need to worry about getting hacked and updates are easy to implement. I like the folder structure and that I can update on a local copy in Windows Explorer folders.

Cons

It is difficult to find features on menus and to know which features are part of jAlbum and which go with the skin. I would like to have a better interface to index with Google and other search engines. As far as I can tell, my titles, descriptions and keywords are not getting indexed in Google.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks for your valuable and elaborate review on jAlbum Richard! As for the indexing problem, please write us at [email protected] and pass a link to the relevant album. We promise to look into it and see what can be done about the indexing.

As for finding features: Have you tried the magnifying glass button in the top-right corner of jAlbum? Just click it (or hit CTRL+Space) and type what you're looking for. jAlbum will then guide you to the relevant setting, no matter if it's a jAlbum setting or skin setting.

Great software for web albums

I love using this program. I have my own art site where I post paintings and pictures. I update it frequently when new works are completed. Once the site is defined, updating is simple. I can add the items and have it all uploaded in a matter of minutes. I am also happy I can use my own domains and not rely upon their service to host my site. Not that there's a problem with that (some people do use that feature) but I prefer managing my own sites.

Pros

The ability to customize a site to one's specific needs and tastes is the best feature. There are lots of skins (templates) to start with, and most of those skins allow you to tweak the settings to get the exact look you want. However, you don't have to do anything and the defaults will give you a great result. I'm quite happy with the results and I can't imagine not using this for my website.

Cons

There can be a LOT of features, depending upon the skin being used. There is a learning curve.

Response from jAlbum

Thank you for your review Jeffrey and for telling what aspects of jAlbum you value: ability to customize appearance, integrity and ease of managing large image volumes

Absolutely essential for photo sharing

It's one of the programs which are a MUST HAVE in my opinion. Easy to use, not too expensive, and great features.

Pros

THis is absolutely one of the ESSENTIAL programs we use to produce albums of photos. It's so absolutely easy to use and I just have to put photos in a folder, click make album then click upload, and they're available on the web

Cons

I keep my photos locally, and thus am the only person who can manage the photo album online. I need to figure out how to allow other people to add photos... this may just be my lack of knowledge of the program though.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks for your positive review Dan. To allow others to contribute with images to galleries, right-click the current project and select "Collaborative albums->Connect inbox", then you can use "Collaborative albums->Email Invite" to invite people to email images straight into the album

Does the job

In general an excellent product, solid and reliable. Not hard to understand and has plenty of flexibility. The customer service was excellent, I had a need for a macro to extract metadata from images and the team wrote one for me!

Pros

If, like me, you want to control your online content then you do not want to use cloud services from big tech. I have my own website and jAlbum allows me to display my images exactly how I want and most importantly under my control.

Cons

There are a couple of features I would like to add - some of the templates need to be worked around to get exactly what I want, an itegrated html editor would help too.

Response from jAlbum

Thanks Frederick! We hope more and more users see the need for independent photo sharing solutions like jAlbum. Putting all eggs in the baskets of a few software giants isn't clever, and you realize that.

Flexible, Easy, and Feature Rich

I examined several other on-line cloud based album systems and JAlbum met my expectations better than everything else I looked at.

Pros

I have been a JAlbum user for many years. One of the great features I like is the hybrid approach of keeping my photo files locally AND keeping the album in their cloud. The interface is cosmetically flexible and pleasing to just about anybody's tastes. The system works well for sharing photos with others using a simple link and the mobile interface works well.I have also been very satisfied with their customer support when I open a ticket for an answer that I cannot find in the help. Quick knowledgeable answers have been the standard for my questions.

Cons

In generally I have no serious complaints about JAlbum. My only minor frustration is an occasional issue finding an answer in their help system. Most questions are covered by their Help system but sometimes an odd question requires their Customer Service to respond.

Response from jAlbum

Jalbum works great for generating a static album from my existing folder structure

Jalbum has enabled me to generate my family photo album of roughly 40,000 photos

Pros

Relatively easy to update my galleries and regenerate the album

Cons

I also use Photoprism to perform AI-based facial recognition and categorization of these photos. Photoprism also includes a search feature, which allows me to seach by a person's name, a location, a description, etc. Would love an AI-based photo identification and search function, but I suspect that this would be a huge undertaking.

Personal Use of jAlbum

My needs are quite simple and for personal use to make picture albums by year for my use. This program, jAlbum, allows me to do this economically and easily. I've used it for several years and am well pleased with the results. I do not post these pictures publicly. They are for my uses only.

Pros

This is an easy-to-use program that allows me to generate picture albums of various groups of members and/or staff for personal use, all of equal size. It is used to quickly put names and faces together, to which I can then add other information as desired.

Cons

It would be nice to be able to remove some background data in pictures.

Cons

The software tends to "forget" where it left off, causing it to require new file creation upon reboot and relaunch. This isn't a big deal for my purposes as I create individual albums and uploade to my server, writing my own html.

Best I’ve used since 1996.

I use it on two of my websites, with probably close to a quarter of a million photos split up across a dozen main galleries.

Pros

I have been posting digital photos online since I purchased my first digital camera in 1996. I have gone through MANY online web gallery solutions over the years, as my collection grew too large for them to support. My galleries have broken Windows and Mac programs equally, forcing me to continue to look for another solution. Then I found JAlbum.JAlbum has continued to handle anything I have thrown at it — and that is organized galleries of over 100,000 photos with thousands of folders.

Cons

There is a learning curve to making new skins. I’d really like to see a more modular way, where a user could select things they want and have one created.
